Introduction to Mid Calder Parent Council
Who Are We?
The Mid Calder Parent Council is a dedicated group of parents and carers collaborating with the school leadership team to enhance our children's education and well-being. Our current members include Gillian Cyphus (Chair), Yvonne Hannah (Secretary), and Amy Knight-Dawson (PC & PSA Member).
Why We Exist
Our mission is to represent parents' views and support the school in providing the best experience for all pupils. We act as a bridge between the parent body and the school faculty, offering feedback, raising concerns, contributing to the School Improvement Plan, and fostering a stronger school community.
What Do We Do?
We discuss staffing updates, school improvement plans, and the school's focus on equity and creative subjects like music, dance, and drama. We explore ways to strengthen community links, such as a proposed cafe, tuck shop and healthy snack donations. We also address playground safety, providing financial support to families with uniform and camp costs, and fundraising through community grants. We have plans to replace the pre-loved school clothing rack with a more comprehensive clothing bank. In recent years we've hosted a Christmas jumper swap stall at the school Christmas fair to support families and promote sustainability.
How You Can Help
Community Outreach: We are always in search of new parent council members. To get involved, please contact Parent Council Chair, Gillian Cyphus via the school email: wlmidcalder-ps@westlothian.org.uk (opens new window)
Further Opportunities To Support
Adjacent to the Parent Council is the Parent And Staff Association (PSA), that focuses on events and fundraising for Mid Calder Primary School. Both committees meet monthly and welcome new members. If you can't commit to monthly meetings, the PSA invites volunteers to help at school events. Contact the Mid Calder PSA on Facebook or email the current PSA Chair, Deborah Fleming, at psa-midcalder@hotmail.co.uk.
